Tampa Physician Explains The Different Types Of Dermal Fillers & Injectables

Dermal fillers and injectables are a quick and easy way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the face. With so many options on the market, it’s hard to know which treatments are right for your skin concerns. Let’s go one by one and break down what each dermal filler or injectable treatment is and what it’s best used for.

Botox®

Botox® is one of the most popular injectables on the market today. Having become a household name and been popularized by TV shows and the media, there are many misconceptions about what Botox® does and what it’s used for. Botox® is an injectable the temporarily eliminates movement in the treated muscles, reducing the amount of what surgeons call “action wrinkles,” or the lines on your forehead and between the brows. This treatment is almost exclusively for treating those areas, and not for adding volume back into areas of the face that have fallen over time. Botox® results last for up to six months.

Xeomin®

With the same active ingredient as Botox®, Xeomin® is a great alternative for patients who didn’t get the results they expected to get from their Botox® treatment. Xeomin® is a similar product to Botox in that it reduces the appearance of frown lines between the brows and “action wrinkles” on the forehead. However, Xeomin® also has some other uses up its sleeve. Dr. Mang claims Xeomin® can also be used to rid your face of crow’s feet, chin wrinkles, and dimples, and wrinkles on the neck. Because it has the same effect in the muscles as Botox®, the treatment should not be used for filling in areas of the face that have lost volume over time. Results of your Xeomin® treatment usually last between three and four months.

Juvederm®

Juvederm® is a treatment made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring sugar in the body that binds to water molecules to add volume to areas of the face. Unlike Botox® and Xeomin®, this treatment does not temporarily eliminate muscle movements, rather it fills in the areas of the face that have lost volume over time. Different versions of Juvederm® in the Juvederm® line have different effects on the face.

  • Juvederm Voluma® – This type of filler is best used to fill in areas of the cheeks. The loss of collagen makes for a droopy or saggy appearance to the skin. Voluma® is the only filler that is proven to add volume to the cheeks for up to two years at a time.
  • Juvederm Vollure® – This product is used to smooth lines and wrinkles around the mouth, also known as the parentheses or smile lines. Vollure® will provide you a solution by filling in those lines of the face for up to 18 months.
  • Juvederm Volbella® -This type of filler is best to add volume to the lips and soften the appearance of vertical lines around the lips. This long-term filler will make sure your lips stay plump for up to 18 months at a time.

Radiesse®

Radiesse® is similar to Juvederm® in that it acts as a filler to add volume back into parts of the face that have depleted over time. Made of a mixture of calcium, hydrogen, and carbon suspended in a gel-like liquid, this filler is best for filling in the fine lines and wrinkles that occur around the mouth and eyes as we age. Radiesse® will last for up to 18 months in the skin, providing long-lasting results and giving you the plump and youthful look you desire.
